RALEIGH -- Sept. 2 our beloved son, Erik Ivan Hrebenuyuk, passed away at Rex Hospital surrounded by his family. After a courageous three-year fight with osteosarcoma, Erik finally found peace and joined his grandparents in Heaven.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Norris, OSFS, presiding. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Erik was born in Hampton, Va., May 3, 1983, to Boris and Theresa Siek Hrebenuyuk of Goldsboro.

He graduated in 2005 from North Carolina State University. After his graduation, Erik was diagnosed with cancer. Erik immediately began his fight against osteosarcoma. His unbelievable courage and fervent desire to help others will live on in many ways. Erik worked as a medical lab technologist with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

In addition to his parents, Erik is survived by his grandmother, Maria Hrebeniuk of Wallington, N.J.; his aunts and uncles and their families, Walter Hrebeniuk and wife, Maryann, of Clifton, N.J., Victor Hrebeniuk of Wallington, N.J., Margaret "Aunt Cookie" of Garfield, N.J., Joseph Siek and wife, Joni, of Waldwick, N.J., Stephanie Fett of Goldsboro and Matthew Siek and wife, Loretta, of Toms River, N.J.; a special aunt and uncle, Pat and Harry Maitland of Clifton, N.J.; and his goddaughter, Madison Hrebeniuk.

Erik was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ivan Hrebeniuk; his maternal grandparents, Stanley and Stella Siek, and his faithful dog, Beeker.

Erik and the Hrebenuyuk family want to thank the superb medical staff at Duke Medical Center, Wake Med Physical Therapy and Rex Hospital for their skills, their caring and their love. We also want to thank all our extended family members and friends, as well as Erik's special friends, who gave us so much and asked nothing in return. All of you will always be in our hearts and in our prayers.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
