BERNICE GIBSON DAVIS

EUREKA -- Bernice Gibson Davis, 87, died peacefully at his home Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. at Eureka United Methodist Church in Eureka, N.C., with visitation following, with the Rev. Dr. Gerry Davis and the Rev. Charles Moseley officiating. Burial will follow the visitation in Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.

Bernice was born April 29, 1923, in Wayne County to the late Charles Staton and Celia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Davis.

He was a longtime resident of the Eureka community, and was a member of Eureka United Methodist Church.

He farmed the land that has been in his family for more than 200 years, and later worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural letter carrier, where he left many pieces of candy in the mailboxes for the children on his route.

Bernice is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Esther Edmundson Davis; sons, Jim Davis and wife, Nan, of Cary and the Rev. Dr. Gerry Davis and wife, Carolyn, of Fayetteville; and daughters, Peggy Moseley and husband, the Rev. Charles Moseley, of Edenton and Nora Finch and husband, Ed, of Wilson. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Jon Davis and wife, Krista, of Matthews, Megan Hodge and husband, Tim, of Cary, Staton Davis and wife, Jillian, of Athens, Ohio, Toni Mann of Lubbock, Texas, Joshua Davis and wife, Ashley, of Clayton, Jarrod Davis of Garner, Celia Moseley of Edenton, Anna Scarff and husband, Jonathan, of Louisville, Ky., Charles F. Moseley of Edenton, Leah Finch and Leslie Finch of Wilson; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren, Chad Underhill and Amy Holding of Garner; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Irwin H. Davis of Four Oaks.
