BETTE DAVIS HOUSTON

CEDAR GROVE -- Bette "Bet" Davis Houston, 83, passed away Oct. 1, 2010, peacefully at home.

She was the widow of Dr. Ben Houston of Goldsboro, N.C., and the daughter of Wilfert O'Dell and Kathleen Sessions Davis of Weldon, N.C.

Mrs. Houston attended Weldon High School and spent two years at Women's College in Greensboro, N.C., and one year at the Medical College of Virginia in medical technology.

She met Ben while his father was a minister at the Methodist Church in Weldon, N.C., and they married there Dec. 22, 1951. The two of them moved to Goldsboro in 1952 and enjoyed more then 40 years of wonderful Wayne County life.

She gave her time to her family, Reach to Recovery for breast cancer survivors, St. Paul United Methodist Church, Girl Scout Troop 224, the Go-To Club and her gardening.

Bet is survived by her sisters, Sarah "Skeet" West Campbell of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Kathleen "Kash" Davis Long of Charlotte, N.C.; daughters, Betsy Houston of Chapel Hill, N.C., Dr. Bennett Houston Lockamy of Chapel Hill and Cedar Grove, N.C., and Sally Houston Sullivan of Lynchburg, Va.; and grandchildren, Patrick Sullivan, Ryan Sullivan and Sarah Victoria Lockamy.

A memorial service is planned for Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with preliminary greetings for Bet's family and friends at 2:30 p.m. in the parlor of St. Paul Church.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church's Thompson Fund or the Altar Guild or to Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
