MARY HOWELL CROCKETT

Mary Mathilda Howell Crockett, 88, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 6, 2010, in Kennesaw, Ga., with her son John Lathan Crockett by her side.
She was born July 23, 1922, in Pikeville, daughter of Luther and Hattie Howell. She had four sisters, Martha Howell Mumford of Pikeville, Daphne Howell Penuel of Charlotte, Cora Roberts of Pikeville, (deceased), Ruthie Howell Bass of Baltimore, Md. (deceased); and one brother, Clifton Howell of LaGrange (deceased).
Mary grew up in Pikeville and attended Pfeiffer College. She then worked in Washington, D.C., for Alcoa Aluminum where she met and married Rufus L Crockett of Lancaster, S.C. (deceased). He was a civil engineer with the Army, later becoming assistant secretary of the Air Force. Among the cities that they lived in were Arlington, Va., Redondo Beach, Calif., Colorado Springs, Colo., Montgomery Ala., and retiring in Lakeland, Fla., and Lutz, Fla.
Mary was active in volunteer work, assisting with the USO, Women's Auxiliary at George Washington Hospital, representing the Air Force for over eight years at funerals for veterans at Arlington Cemetery, PTA, and various committees at the Presbyterian Church.
Mary was an avid fan of the Redskins, Florida State, tennis, and especially basketball (N.C. State). She was a great golfer and loved playing bridge. She and her husband, Davey, were world travelers, visiting all 50 states as well as most of the world. In her spare time she enjoyed needlepoint, sewing, and was a gourmet cook.
She had two children, John Lathan Crockett of Acworth, Ga. and Marilyn Crockett Marion of Vero Beach Fla.; and one grandson, Christopher Lathan Crockett also of Acworth, Ga. She was greatly loved and will be missed.
Mary will be cremated and later buried with her husband in the family plot in Lancaster, SC. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Association.
