MOUNT OLIVE -- Life-long Mount Olive resident Clyde Armstrong Williams died Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
A service to celebrate and remember the life of Clyde Armstrong Williams will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church, corner of Breazeale Avenue and Main Street in Mount Olive.
He was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Mount Olive to the late James Henry and DeElla Blythe Williams.
Mr. Williams graduated from Mount Olive High School in 1943. He was further educated at North Georgia Military Academy and the Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
His military career of World War II was with the 185th Infantry Regiment, 40th Division. He was stationed in the Phillipine Islands and served with the occupational forces in Korea. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 with medals of honor.
He returned to Mount Olive to operate his family farms.
Clyde was a local farmer and Chevrolet car dealer of Clyde Williams Chevrolet from 1965 until 1983.
Clyde pursued his passions in genealogy, travel and as a patron of the Mount Olive Museum. He also enjoyed playing bridge and spades and meeting for coffee at Southern Belle Restaurant.
In his earlier years, Clyde was active in Mount Olive Jaycees, the Mount Olive Rotary Club, Mount Olive Exchange Club, planning board of revitalization for downtown Mount Olive, served as deacon and elder of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church and was delegate to the Wilmington Presbytery. He also served on the Mount Olive local school board.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Smith Williams; their two daughters, Molly W. Holler of Goldsboro and Laura W. Fairman and her husband, Don; and grandchildren, Nicholas W. Fairman, 21, and Katherine B. Fairman, 20, of Winter Park, Fla.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He will be remembered as a Southern gentleman in the truest sense of the word. His positive outlook on life was contagious to all that were fortunate enough to have known him.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 206 W. James St. in Mount Olive Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
