DAVIS NATHANIEL

June 12, 1939-Jan. 31, 2010

Dr. Davis Nathaniel passed away after a lengthy illness in the early morning hours of Sunday.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home on Wayne Memorial Drive Wednesday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Gerald Garris officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Dr. Nathaniel was born June 12, 1939, and grew up in India, where his father was an Assembly of God minister.

He attended school, college and medical university in India. After practicing in a large Christian hospital as the house surgeon, he entered private practice in India. Subsequently, he moved to the United States and after taking all of the equivalency exams, attended internal medicine residency at St. Francis Hospital in Trenton, N.J. This was a Hanuman-affiliated residency program. Being quite gifted in cardiology, he was offered a fellowship in cardiology at Deborah Heart and Lung institute, one of the top heart and lung hospitals in the United States. Due to personal reasons, he declined this fellowship and came to Goldsboro, where he worked for many years at Cherry Hospital. He made many improvements there. The first few months he was employed, the mortality rate declined from quite high to zero deaths. He was a dedicated physician who stood at the bedside of his patients for many hours until they were stabilized.

Dr. Nathaniel was honored with an appointment to the American Academy of Cardiology.

He is survived by two sisters, A. Price of New Bern and M. Singh of India; two brothers, professor D. Nathaniel of Fayetteville and H. Nathaniel of India; two daughters, Bobby Nathaniel and friend, Cheryl Poarch, and Florence Nathaniel; his ex-wife, Eudora Nathaniel; his best friend, Leigh Anne Franklin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Dr. Nathaniel was preceded in death by a sister, I. Nathaniel; his mother, Florence Nathaniel; and his father, the Rev. Sunny Nathaniel.
