WILBERT A. 'MUSS' MUSSELMAN

Wilbert Arthur "Muss" Musselman, 85, died Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Born in Johnstown, Pa., he was the son of the late Arthur Musselman and Vera Ethel Lingenfelter Musselman, and husband of the late Charlotte "Smiley" Musselman.

He was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church and a member of the Wayne County Amateur Radio Association.

He held a dual membership in Wayne Masonic Lodge No. 112 and Goldsboro Masonic Lodge No. 634, and was a member of Goldsboro York Rite Bodies and Wayne Shrine Club. He was a member of Eastern Star, a Rainbow Girls advisor and member of DeMolay Council 163.

Muss enlisted in the United States Air Force in December 1947, and was sent to San Antonio, Texas, for basic training. He then transferred to Cheyenne, Wyo., for refrigeration training, and then to the Howard Air Force Base in the Panama Canal Zone.

He became a rookie fireman during 1949 and 1950, and was sent to Keesler Air Force Base with the fire service. He continued his Air Force career as a firefighter at Amarillo Air Force Base, Shemya Air Force Base and Eglin Air Force Base.

He then met and married his wife in 1955.

He was then sent to Athens, Greece, as a firefighter and then to Chaumont, France, where he served as fire chief at a small base from 1958 to 1959. He then transferred to Greenville, S.C., then to Murphy Dome Air Force Base and to Lockbourne Air Force Base, where he served as assistant fire chief under the Strategic Air Command.

He was sent to Wildwood Air Force Base in Alaska for two years, and then to Plattsburgh Air Force Base, again serving as assistant fire chief.

In 1971, Muss retired from the United States Air Force, moved to Goldsboro, N.C., and was hired as a fireman with the city of Goldsboro, where he again retired after 13 years.

He then worked at various automotive parts warehouses for eight more years.

He was member of the Air Force Sergeant's Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Wayne Masonic Lodge, with the Rev. Doug Colton officiating.

Family members will greet friends at Wayne Masonic Lodge immediately following the funeral.

Survivors include his sons, Paul "Muss2" Musselman and wife, Lorraine, of Zebulon and Jason Stormbringer and wife, Michelle, of Louisville, Ky., and a brother, Norman Musselman of California.
