Deacon Cary Kenneth Barnes, 76, departed this life Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Funeral services will be Thursday at Goldsboro-Raleigh District Assembly, 214 W. Hooks River Road. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park, Dudley. Deacon Barnes will lie in state today from 2 until 7 at Greenleaf Christian Church, 2110 N. William St., with the family present from 6 until 7.

Deacon Cary K. Barnes Sr. was born Aug. 27, 1936, to the late Stephen and Beulah Jacobs Barnes. He departed this life Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.

Cary grew up in the North End community. He attended Greenleaf Elementary School and graduated from Dillard High School in 1954. He furthered his education at Wayne Community College.

Cary retired from General Electric Company in Goldsboro after 32 years. During his years at GE, he also worked part-time at Mason's Department Store. Cary joined Greenleaf Christian Church at an early age and remained faithful until his health began to decline. As a member, he served as a deacon, on the board of trustees, the board of directors of Rebuilding broken Places Community Development Corporation, and as a Sunday school teacher, Cary united in holy matrimony to Janice Hamilton, and together they were blessed with six children.

Cary was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Beulah Barnes; his son, Wesley Allen Barnes; and a sibling, Jaqueline B. Alston.

Fond memories and wisdom will be cherished in the hearts of his wife, Janice; daughters, Renee (James) and Marion; sons, Gary (Dixie), Ricky (Wilma) and Cary Jr. (Beverly); grandchildren, Tia (Anthony), Janee, Lanette, Shadae, Wesley, David, Monty, Eric, Ricky Jr., Ryan, Trey, Vaugh, Dennis, Darrick, Michael and Andre; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Jayden, Jailyn, Sean, Saleem, Shaquan, Michael III, Dwayne, Marcel, Ambreia, Khaileef, and Kharee; sisters, Alee, Mary (Ozenia), Bernetta (Earl), Judith (Melvin), Karon (Lee) and Wanda; brothers, Wilbur, Ben (Margaret) and Johnnie (Ann); brothers-in-law, James Hamilton (Edna) and John Hamilton (Sara); sisters-in-law, Emma L. Hamilton and Effie Bynum; an aunt, Lila B. Jacobs; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
