Roland Bright "R.B." Gurley, 87, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2012, surrounded by his family at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

R.B. was born in Wayne County Jan. 29, 1925, to the late Roland Lynn Gurley and Nelta Thompson Gurley.

He was a lifetime member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church, and was also a member of the United Methodist Men.

R.B. was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a farmer in the Rosewood community until going to work as superintendent with Bill Howell Construction Co. until his retirement.

A service to celebrate R.B.'s life will be held Friday, March 23, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Pine Forest United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Van Spivey officiating. Interment will be Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the church cemetery.

R.B. is survived by his wife of 67 years, Milner Parks Gurley; his children, Alma Jeanne Rutledge and husband, Wilburn, of Goldsboro, Roland L. Gurley and wife, Sandra, of Goldsboro and Myra Kaye Pilkington and husband, Jimmy, of Newton Grove; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Michelle Bizzell and husband Steve, Leigh Anne Mayes and husband, Kirk, Tommy Rutledge and wife, Amy, Jessica Tyndall, Jamye Tyndall, Holly Lewis and husband, Jason, and Niki Howell and husband, Jamie; nine great-grandchildren, Brent Bizzell, Brenna Bizzell, Ashleigh Mayes, Trent Mayes, Tyler Rutledge, Dylan Rutledge, Nick Lewis, Zoe Lewis and Kayleigh Tyndall; his sister-in-law, Maye S. Gurley Myers; and brother-in-law, Lester Forehand of Goldsboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, T. Ralph Gurley, and a sister, Dorothy Gurley Forehand.

The family will receive friends Friday following the service in the church fellowship hall.
