JOHN THIGPEN

MOUNT OLIVE -- Wilton Oliver "John" Thigpen, 88, 601 Steele St., died Tuesday night, March 20, 2012, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home Friday, March 22, from 10 to 11 a.m., at which time funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel. Dr. Dennis R. Atwood will officiate, with burial following in Maplewood Cemetery.
Mr. Thigpen, a native of the Scott's Store section of Duplin County, was the oldest survivor among six brothers born to the late Alex and Jessie Outlaw Thigpen.
He had served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, and was well known in the local area for his maintenance and repair skills.
During his working career, he had been associated with E.T. Ferrell and Son, R.E. Sutton, J.S. Jordan, Hasty Plumbing and Heating, Boling Chair, Western Auto and Simmons Hardware. Due to declining health, he had been unable to be active in any of his personal endeavors for a good while, but remained forever loyal to those places in which he held a long time membership, including American Legion Mount Olive Post 103, Mount Olive Lions Club and Mount Olive Fire Department, from which he was a retired volunteer.
In addition, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive and its Loyal Soldiers Bible class.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edna Mozingo Thigpen, of the home.
Surviving brothers include Alfred Thigpen of Mount Olive, Morris Thigpen of Amelia, Va., and Franklin Thigpen of West Point, Va., and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. and Mrs. John Thigpen had no children, but had a close relationship with Ed Jernigan and Ray Myers and their families.
