CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Marina Andrews Wimett, 87, of Cambridge Square Apartments, died Thursday.
Mrs. Wimett's ashes will be interred in the Andrews Family Plot in Goldsboro at a later date.
She was born May 11, 1923, in Fayetteville. Her family moved to Goldsboro in June of 1929, where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Andrews resided until their deaths. Her family belonged to St. Paul United Methodist Church in Goldsboro throughout their lives. After graduation from Goldsboro High School, Marina Andrews attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro. Later she received a B.S. degree in English at Radford University, Radford, Va.
Mrs. Wimett enlisted in the Air Force on May 11, 1944, and was stationed in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada, until Nov. 23, 1945. Upon her return to Goldsboro after World War II, she met and later married Hal Grant Wimett on Feb. 23, 1947. Mr. Grant was a well-known radio announcer and entertainer in Goldsboro and was originally from Ripton, Vt. They moved after their wedding to Roanoke, Va., where they lived until 1985. Mr. Wimett passed away Aug. 21, 2000. In her maturity Mrs. Wimett taught school for 10 years for the Roanoke City Schools.
In 1985, Mrs. Wimett volunteered for service in the Peace Corps and was sent to Nakhon Sawan Province, Thailand, for a two and a half year stint teaching English as a second language. After her service was over she lived in Thailand for six additional years. While living there she traveled in surrounding countries as well as countries throughout the world before she returned to the United States to live in 1993.
She settled in Chesapeake shortly after her return to be near her family. She is survived by her sons, Harold Allen Wimett and his wife, Sue, of Richmond, Va., Forrest Wimett and his wife, Diane McCarron, of Kitty Hawk, Roger Wimett of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a daughter, Martha Wimett Lozier and her husband, Rick Lozier, of Chesapeake, Va. She is also survived by three grandsons, two great grandsons, and numerous nieces and nephews.
