MARY L. BURNS

Mary L. Burns, 84, Vienna, W. Va., passed away Oct. 10, 2010. in Goldsboro, N.C., where she had made her home with her daughter for the past three years.
She was born Sept. 8, 1926, in Cumberland, Md., the daughter of the late John Irwin and Anna Regina McDonough.
After graduation from St. Peter's High School in Fairmont, W. Va., she attended business college.
Sept. 30, 1950, she married Patrick J. Burns, who preceded her in death in 2002.
In addition to being a homemaker, she was a bookkeeper, office manager, expert craftswoman, seamstress, toy maker and porcelain doll maker.
She enjoyed playing tennis, and was active in several women's leagues in Vienna and at Greenmont Racquet Club.
For many years she was active in Parkersburg Catholic Women's Auxiliary, whose sewing and craft creations help support girls athletics.
She also volunteered for the American Red Cross. She was former co-owner of Dolls, Etc. in Parkersburg, where she taught porcelain doll making.
She also enjoyed gardening and traveling.
She had been a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Parkersburg since 1962, and was an avid supporter of Catholic education and faith.
She is survived by her daughters, Ann Burns of Goldsboro, Margaret Burns of Elkins, W. Va., and Kathleen Burns of Virginia Beach, Va.; and her sons, Michael (Betty) Burns of Madison, N.C., James (Wanda) Burns of McDonald, Pa., and John (Barbara) Burns of St. Marys, W. Va.; five grandchildren, Logan, Ayla, Camden, Caetlyn and Caleb Burns; three stepgrandchildren, Cameron, Betsy and Austin (Deanna) Martin; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Pattrick and Baileigh Martin; two brothers, Tom (Beverly) McDonough of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Joe (Betsy) McDonough of Fairmont, W. Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Jim McDonough.
The family extends special thanks to Personal Homecare Solutions of Goldsboro for its caring and professional assistance, and to Home Health and Hospice Care of Goldsboro.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg.
