MOUNT OLIVE -- Retired Mount Olive optometrist Dr. Thomas Edgar Shaver Sr., 85, died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 12, 2010.

Born in Wayne County Dec. 16, 1924, he was the son of the late Maynard Arthur and Moseley Irene Parker Shaver.

He was educated in Goldsboro City Schools and graduated from Goldsboro High School.

He served for three years in the United States Navy, attended Duke University and graduated from Wake Forest College and Pennsylvania State College of Optometry.

In 1951, he married the former Evelyn Robinson, and in 1954, they moved to Mount Olive, where he operated a private optometry practice until his retirement in 2005.

Very active in his community, he served for several terms as an alderman with the town of Mount Olive.

He was a member of Mount Olive Rotary Club and was a member of Woodmen of the World in which he had held every local office. Also, he had served in several national Woodmen offices and had served on its national board of directors.

He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, where he sang in the chancel choir, had served as a deacon and was past chairman of the deaconate board.

Dr. Shaver is survived by his wife, Evelyn Robinson Shaver of the home; his children, Kay Austin Shaver Morgan and husband, Chris, of Raleigh, Thomas E. Shaver Jr. and wife, Betsy, of Kinston and Dr. James William Shaver and wife, Stephanie, of Landis; six grandchildren, Daniel Morgan, Gregory Morgan, Laura Morgan, Amanda Morgan English, Bobby Shaver and Augusta Shaver; a great-granddaughter, Mary Beth Morgan; and two sisters, Ruth Columbus of Columbia, S.C., and Rebecca Johnson of Hope Mills.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, M. A. Shaver Jr., and three sisters, Mary Shaver, Hazel Hoogenboon and Bertha Manwill.

Memorial services for Dr. Shaver will be held Friday, Oct. 15, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, with Dr. Dennis Atwood officiating. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

The family will receive friends in the Christian Life Center of First Baptist Church on Friday from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and at the residence at other times
