Joseph Worth Turner, 98, of Goldsboro died Saturday at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at New Hope United Methodist Church, 200 East New Hope Road, Goldsboro. The Rev. Todd Krueger will officiate. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Burial will be at Duplin Memorial Gardens in Teachey, at 2:30 p.m. with military honors.
Mr. Turner was born in Teachey to Bertice James Turner and Frances Wells Turner. He was in the Army Air Corp 1942-1946, serving during World War II in Southern Asia. After discharge, he became a tobacco inspector/grader for the USDA Tobacco Division covering the southeast. He retired in 1971 after 36 years.
In addition to his parents, as the last living sibling, he was preceded in death by Wilburn Wells Turner, James Moody Turner, Hallie Francis Turner, Manley Ward Turner, David Gordon Turner; Harriett Turner East, and Lucille Turner Burleigh.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Elsie Jenkins Turner, two sons, Joseph Worth Turner Jr. of Kill Devil Hills and Barry Wayne Turner, and wife Mari Jo, of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Aaron Blake Turner of Phoenix, Ariz., Andrew Logan Turner of the U.S. Air Force, Alexander Wayne Turner of Raleigh, Haley Rebecca Turner of Greensboro; and stepgranddaughter, Ellen McKinney and husband, Chad; three great-grandchildren, Ella Rose, Spencer and Connor McKinney of Westfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Turner was a founding and charter member of New Hope United Methodist Church of Goldsboro.
Friends will be received at Seymour Funeral Home Monday 5 until 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to New Hope United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
