Wayne Christian blanks Northwood, claims CCC tournament title

WILSON -- Ted Suggs earned MVP honors and was named the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference player-of-the-year after Wayne Christian completed its season-long goal of obtaining the "double" in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play.

The Eagles defeated Northwood Temple, 6-0, in the CCC tournament final Thursday afternoon on the Community Christian baseball diamond. Just days earlier, the No. 4-ranked Eagles (12-6 overall) secured the CCC regular-season title, which gave them the automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs. The 12-team field will be announced Sunday afternoon.

Austin Howell and Tanner Rose cranked out two hits apiece against Northwood. Hunter Burt (RBI), Suggs (two RBI) and Tyler Mozingo each provided one hit. Burt and Rose each had a double, while Mozingo tripled.

Trey Hinton added an RBI.

Wayne Christian reached the semifinals with a 12-1, mercy-rule conquest of Lee Christian. The Eagles solidified the outcome with a pair of five-run outbursts in the second and fourth innings.

Price and Foster each had two hits in the Eagles' 12-hit attack. Howell RBI), Mozingo , Rose, Suggs, Ryan Kennedy, Hinton and Jaxon Anderson each had one hit.

Burt swatted a home run and drove in three runs.

Foster earned the mound win. He retired eight Lee Christian batters on strikeouts and surrendered one earned run on three hits in the five-inning affair.

Rose, Mozingo, Foster, Howell and Burt each earned all-CCC accolades. Rose, Foster and Burt were selected to the all-tournament team.
