SEVEN SPRINGS -- Antonio Ponce collected both goals as Spring Creek turned back county rival Southern Wayne 2-1 on a misty, overcast and cool Monday afternoon.

Ricardo Rangel and Christian Moncayo each recorded an assist for the Gators.

Spring Creek (2-0-0 overall) travels to Midway today.

Cougars go down

KENLY -- State-ranked North Johnston recorded its second consecutive shutout with a 9-0 decision over Goldsboro on Monday.

The Panthers (2-1-1 overall) notched their second straight triumph over a Carolina 1-A Conference team within the past week.

"The score may not indicate it, but I was proud of the team," said Goldsboro head coach Tyler Gatlin.

Goldsboro returns to action Wednesday at Wayne Country Day.

Cross country

Princeton claims meet

PRINCETON -- Wayne Christian's Connor Jones captured first-place honors with a time of 18 minutes and 28 seconds during a tri-meet at Princeton High School on Monday afternoon.

Will Toler emerged the Dawgs' top finisher in third place (18:56), and helped the home team win the meet with 29 points. Caleb Hinton (21:37), Will Denning (21:43), Chris Dewberry (21:49) and Dalton Langdon (23:03) contributed to Princeton's score.

On the girls' side of the ledger Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price finished first overall in 24:27. Hattie Dougherty (25:05) finished second for Princeton as the Dawgs edged Midway 27-28 in the team chase.

Tennis

Rams fall

SNOW HILL -- State-ranked foes Greene Central and Wilson Fike dueled on a cool Monday afternoon and the unbeaten Demons pulled out a 6-3, non-conference win.

Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail each earned a singles point for the Rams. The duo of Dail-Jessica Gray notched Greene Central's lone doubles point.

"Jessica turned in fine performances in singles and in doubles," said Greene Central head coach Donald Clark. "Today was probably the best she has played this season."

Greene Central (3-4 overall) entertains Eastern Plains 2-A newcomer Kinston today.

Volleyball

Rebels prevail

CALYPSO -- North Duplin tallied an impressive 25-10, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18 non-conference volleyball victory over James Keenan on Monday night.

Tearra Ammons led the Rebels with six kills. Alonna Pate added nine service aces, while teammate Hannah Brock dished out seven assists.

North Duplin (1-2 overall) entertains Hobbton today.

Eagles grounded

Rosewood suffered a hard-fought loss to Farmville Central on Monday afternoon 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 27-25.

Taylor Johnson led the Eagles with 15 kills. Alyssa Spell dished out eight assists and Rachael Kornegay tallied five blocks.

Rosewood (0-5 overall) plays host to Rocky Mount Prep on Thursday.

Swimming

Wharton, Stewart place

APEX -- Goldsboro swimmers Suzi Wharton and Roark Stewart each recorded a top-three finish in their respective divisions during in the Nuclear Swim at Sharon Harris Lake.

The 1-mile, open water swim included 250 competitors of all age groups.

Wharton placed second in the 50-54 female division with a time of 30 minutes, 41.3 seconds. Stewart ended up third in the 50-54 male division with a time of 26:42.1.

JV sports

* Soccer: Wayne Country Day d. Wayne Christian 3-0 -- Wyatt Bland tallied two goals for the Chargers. Miller Gerrard capped the scoring with one goal. Wayne Country Day improved to 3-0 overall.

* Volleyball: Wayne Christian d. Spring Creek 25-10, 25-13 -- The Eagles will host Crossroads Christian today.

* Volleyball: North Duplin d. James Kenan 25-17, 25-16 -- Alonna Pate led the Rebels with 19 aces. Jessica Jones added four kills and Leighann Torres finished with four digs.

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Farmville Central 25-20, 24-26, 25-14 -- Kerri Jo Gurley led the Eagles with eight kills. Amanda Howell scored 16 points from the service line. Rosewood improved to 3-2 overall.
