MOC men share 10th in region poll

MOUNT OLIVE -- Welcome back.
Mount Olive College, for the sixth consecutive year, has earned a spot in the regional poll. After their season-opening victory over USC Aiken, the Trojans share the No. 10 ranking in the Division II Southeast Region poll.
Also at No. 10 are Coker (S.C.) College and Lander (S.C.) University.
Tusculum (Tenn.) College holds the No. 1 spot and two-time defending Conference Carolinas champion Lees-McRae is second. Overall, six Conference Carolinas teams are represented in the first regional poll of the season, voted upon by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Mount Olive (1-0-0 overall) entertains in-state rival Chowan University today. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.
Maloney honored
HIGH POINT -- Mount Olive College transfer Kerry "Bear" Maloney has been selected the Conference Carolinas men's cross country runner of the week.
Maloney, who competed last season at Keystone (Pa.) College, turned in a first-place time of 16 minutes, 27 seconds during the Trojans' season-opening 5K battle against in-state rival Barton. MOC scored a perfect 15 points in the first-ever dual meet contested on its campus.
The Trojans return to action Sept. 12 at the Wingate University Invitational.
Bartley shines
ELIZABETH CITY -- Senior Racey Bartley pounded out a match-high 22 kills, but Mount Olive squandered a two-set advantage in a 25-11, 25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 8-15 loss to Elizabeth City State on Tuesday.
Caitlin Skislak posted her first-ever collegiate double-double -- career-high 11 kills and 13 digs -- in the five-set defeat. Kailey Preece supplied a career-high 14 kills.
Joanie Werling dished out season-high 51 assists. Alexandra Simon recorded a career-best 12 digs defensively.
The Trojans (0-5 overall) return to action this weekend in the Carolina Challenge, which is hosted by Lees-McRae. MOC will face three South Atlantic members -- Carson-Newman, Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum.
Trojans shut out
MOUNT OLIVE -- Wingate University erupted for four goals in a six-minute stretch and collected a 5-0, non-conference women's soccer victory over Mount Olive College on Tuesday evening.
Kerstin Williams logged a hat trick for Wingate.
Trojan goalie Jenn Sastre recorded eight saves.
Mount Olive (0-2-0 overall) entertains Lincoln Memorial at 3 p.m. Sunday.
