PIKEVILLE -- Deliver the first punch.

Charles B. Aycock needed less than three minutes to set the tone with an early goal on its way to a 2-0, non-conference soccer victory over Wilson Fike on Monday night.

Jose Rodriguez scored from just outside the 18-yard box 21/2 minutes into the game.

"I think that first goal set the tone for the game," said Golden Falcons head coach Kevin Adkins. "We controlled almost all the first half."

Aycock outshot Fike 13-0 in the first half. Chase Thompson's point-blank shot in the 19th minute was turned away by Demons' keeper Rob Brown.

David Burke tucked a shot from inside the 18-yard box in the right corner of the goal and extended the lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute.

Each team had a goal waived off in the second half as Burke's goal in the 66th minute was erased on hand ball. Fike had a goal taken off the scoreboard in the 74th minute due to an offsides call.

Plagued by injuries, the Demons struggled to generate consistent possession and when they did create scoring opportunities their shots were mostly off target.

"It's a frustrating loss because we set back in the first half and we had no intensity," said Fike head coach Toni Varacchi. "I was very pleased with the second half. We made some adjustments and played with a lot more intensity. We're definitely improving, but we're still down four or five different guys due to injuries."

After playing without three starting defenders and goalie Brandon Davis in its last outing against Greene Central, Aycock (3-1-0 overall) was at full strength on the back line on Monday night. The Golden Falcons held the Demons (2-5) to just three shots on goal and Davis made three saves.

"Our defense came back this week so that helps," said Adkins. "You could tell by the first half we pushed the ball around very well."

Aycock visits Greene Central on Wednesday.
