Kim Martell flirted with a triple-double as Wayne Country Day swept Goldsboro 25-9, 25-21, 25-17 on the girls' volleyball scene at Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
Martell delivered seven kills, eight digs and eight service aces for the Chargers, who picked up their first win of the 2009 season. Hannah Pearson logged eight aces, six kills and five digs.
Caraleigh Mewborn recorded two aces, six kills and three digs. Sterling Coggins (seven assists) and Edie Hooks (three assists) also contributed to the straight-set victory.
Sterling Simmons led Goldsboro's attack with five kills and three aces.
Wayne Country Day (1-2 overall) travels to Parrott Academy on Thursday, while Goldsboro (1-6) entertains Wilson Fike.
Dogs bite Falcons
PRINCETON -- Princeton turned back Charles B. Aycock 25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20 on Tuesday.
Senior outside hitter Beth Carter provided nine kills for the Golden Falcons. Sophomore Connor Davis had five kills. Cassidy Anderson tallied five aces.
Aycock (1-4 overall) entertains Wilson Hunt on Thursday.
GC stumbles
FARMVILLE -- Greene Central opened Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play on Tuesday with a 15-25, 24-26, 21-25 loss at Farmville Central.
Shonice Pettaway finished with 10 kills and nine blocks for the Rams. Danielle Blizzard added three service aces. Maegan Letchworth contributed five blocks.
Greene Central (0-5 overall, 0-1 EPC) travels to North Pitt on Thursday.
Tennis
Chargers edge Saints
DUDLEY -- Wayne Country Day outlasted Southern Wayne 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
Sarah Best, Mack Thompson, Katherine Roethling and Mollie Catherine McDonald each earned singles wins for the Chargers. The doubles team of Best-Thompson recorded Wayne Country Day's lone doubles point.
Taylor Parker and Mollieanne Kennedy prevailed in singles play for the Saints. The tandems of Morgan Roberts-Erica Strickland and Jessica Best-Parker were doubles winners for Southern Wayne.
The Chargers (1-0 overall) travel to Parrott Academy on Thursday while the Saints begin Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play next Tuesday when they entertain Triton.
Rams bounce back
SNOW HILL -- Greene Central rebounded from a loss to Wilson Fike on Monday by rolling past Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe Kinston 9-0 on Tuesday.
Lauren Carraway, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Samantha Taylor, Jessica Gray, Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail all contributed singles wins for the Rams.
The doubles teams of Carraway-McLawhorn, Gray-Brittany Colie and Dail-Hayes Lovett were also victorious.
Greene Central (4-4 overall, 3-0 EPC) plays host to SouthWest Edgecombe on Thursday.
Soccer
Gators cruise
SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Spring Creek got goals from seven different players and cruised to an 11-0 win at Midway on Tuesday.
Antonio Avalia scored three goals for the Gators. Ricardo Rangel and Angel Sanchez both chipped in two goals. Antonio Ponce, Neal O'Hara, Omar Zavaleta and Luis Anguiano each added a goal.
Spring Creek (3-0-0 overall) entertains Midway on Sept. 8.
WCS gets road win
HENDERSON -- Wayne Christian scored three times in the first 18 minutes and defeated Crossroads Christian 5-0 on Tuesday.
Jonathan Roberts gave the Eagles the lead just two minutes in scoring on a cross from Gregory Alexander. Less than three minutes later Nathan Taylor stuck Jordan Crouthamel's cross in the back of the net. Crouthamel added a goal of his own in the 18th minute to stretch Wayne Christian's lead to 3-0.
Roberts and Taylor each added goals before halftime.
The Eagles (4-2 overall) continue Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play on Friday when they play host to Community Christian.
Warriors defeated
ROCKY MOUNT -- Big East 3-A Conference member Rocky Mount doubled up Eastern Wayne 4-2 on Tuesday.
The No. 13-ranked Gryphons improved to 5-0-2 overall this season.
Goal-scoring information for the Warriors was not available at press time.
Eastern Wayne (1-3-0) looks to snap a three-game skid Thursday at North Johnston.
JV sports
* Soccer: Wayne Country Day d. Parrott Academy 5-2 -- Wyatt Bland and Jack Langston each scored twice for the Chargers (4-0). Tae Yang also supplied a goal.
* Volleyball: Princeton d. C.B. Aycock 25-18, 25-17 -- Emily Martin recorded five aces for the Golden Falcons (3-2) and Ivey Hartzell had four kills.
* Volleyball: Wayne Country Day d. Goldsboro 25-14, 25-18 -- Goldsboro fell to 0-5 overall this season.
