HAZEL T. GODFREY

Jan. 1, 1932-March 4, 2017

Hazel Tadlock Godfrey, 85, Elizabeth City, received her heavenly reward Saturday, March 4, 2017.

Hazel was born Jan. 1, 1932, in Elizabeth City to the late Allen G. Tadlock and Lucille Forehand Tadlock.

Her husband, Joseph Irvin Godfrey, preceded her in death Dec. 3, 2010.

Hazel relished her roles as wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. A homebody, Hazel found great pleasure in cutting her grass and tending to her flowers. Her green thumb and gardening skills were evident everywhere you looked.

Hazel was well known for her butterfly pin collection and her delicious pound cake.

Although Hazel was one who enjoyed being at home, when she stepped out, she was always dressed immaculately with the perfect matching butterfly pin.

She loved gatherings with family and friends. Her warm, loving smile lit up every room she entered.

Hazel was a longtime member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Known as the "Butterfly Lady." Hazel worked in the sporting goods and housewares department at Belk for 13 years.

A service to celebrate and honor Hazel's life will be held Friday, March 10, 2017, at 2 p.m. from Twiford Memorial Chapel, with pastor Delores Langley officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery.

Hazel is survived by a daughter, Ginnie Godfrey Passmore; son, Allen Godfrey and wife, Ann; three grandchildren, Julie Mullan and her husband, Mike, Amy Passmore and her husband, Bryan Swinson, and Micah Godfrey; and one great-grandchild, Emily Marie Mullan.

Hazel's family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home in Elizabeth City.

Memorials may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home of LaGrange and Twiford Funeral Home of Elizabeth City.
