Alice Sylvester Cox, 85, Goldsboro, passed away early Saturday morning, May 28, 2016, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.

Alice was born in Richlands, N.C., March 18, 1931, to the late Louis Sylvester and Gladys Green Sylvester.

She had two brothers, Paul and Louis Hargett, and a sister Avery.

Growing up in Onslow County, she had the rare opportunity as a teenager to attend the Julliard School of Music.

Alice graduated from Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.

She was married for 52 years to her childhood sweetheart, the late James Lloyd Cox, and she showed what it meant to be a loving, supportive wife in sickness and in health.

Alice was a caring mother and a "second" Mom to a few more. She touched many lives with her kindness, and was a good friend and neighbor to many. She loved her family, her state, her community and St. Paul United Methodist Church.

A service to celebrate Alice's life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2016, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James H. Harry officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.

Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.

Alice is survived by her sons, Louis Sylvester Cox and wife, Sarah, of Fayetteville, William Lloyd Cox and wife, Vicenta, of Elizabeth City and John McAllister Cox and wife, Ann, of Waynesville, and her sister, Avery Sylvester Craven of Bedford, N.Y.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Charles, Alice, Shannon, Megan, Cameron, Caroline and Sam, and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
