Sam C. Casey Jr., 91, died Saturday evening at Vidant Healthcare in Greenville.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Samuel and Celia Daniels Casey, and husband of the late Sara Windsor Casey.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Casey Byrd, and a brother, Gary Casey.

He was a lifetime member of Emmaus Baptist Church, a 1941 graduate of Brogden School and a veteran of the United States Army.

He was owner of Wayne Hardwood Lumber Co.

Sam was a charter member of Arrington Volunteer Fire Department and a member of its board of directors until 1995.

He was a past president of the Wayne County Firemen's Association in 1963. He was very instrumental in the early planning of Southeastern Wayne Sanitary District, and was currently serving on its board.

He also was a major factor in the planning and development of the Southern Connector or Bill Lane Boulevard, of which the bridge bears his name as the Sam Casey Bridge.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Emmaus Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating. Burial with fire department honors will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall following the committal. At other times, the family will be at the home of Neal and Connie Casey, 591 Casey Mill Road, Dudley.

He is survived by his sons, Neal Casey and wife, Connie, of Dudley and Dennis Casey of Georgia; a brother, Roger Casey of Goldsboro; a sister, Elizabeth Duncan of Greensboro; and three grandchildren, Craig Byrd, Amy Casey and David Casey.
