Joseph Ray Holmes, 70-year-old resident of the Belfast community, Goldsboro, passed away Sunday morning, Aug. 16, at Wayne Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Berry House, and followed by visitation.

Friends and family are also being received at the residence.

Ray, a native of the Pleasant Grove community in Duplin County, was the son of the late Carson and Bertha "Tom" Holmes.

He had been in the furniture upholstery business, and had been a sewing machine mechanic for most of his working career.

He worshipped at Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He is survived by his wife, Patty Dunn Holmes of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Joey and Angela Holmes of Goldsboro; three grandchildren, Grace Montana, Matthew Carson and John Arthur Holmes; two sisters, Gerlene H. Kennedy of Pink Hill and Marie H. Holmes of Albertson; a brother and sister-in-law, Jackie Carson and Kay Holmes of Pink Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also brother of the late Gloria H. Griffin.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial gifts be made to the American Heart Association, 3219 Landmark St., Suite. 9A, Greenville, N.C., 27834, or American Lung Association, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, Ill., 60601.
