Died Aug. 16, 2015

Joyce Reaves Beverly, Goldsboro, N.C., passed away peacefully at the age of 80 Aug. 16, 2015.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory, with the Rev. Ira Williford officiating. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

Joyce was born and raised in Wayne County.

After graduating from Goldsboro High School in 1953, she moved to Fort Meade, Md., where she met and married her husband, Wilburn Beverly.

Joyce was a homemaker for many years before she began her career as a waitress, working first at Wayne Motel Restaurant and afterward at the Highway 117 Truck Stop Restaurant.

Later, Joyce worked for the state of North Carolina at Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf in Wilson, N.C., where she retired in 1999.

Joyce loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church in Goldsboro, and faithfully attended United in Christ Church.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Wendi Batts and husband Bill of Fremont, N.C.; brother, Elwood Reaves and wife, Helen, of Hampton, Va.; granddaughters, Krystal Cooper and husband, Tony, of Pikeville, N.C., and Madison Batts of Fremont, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Ava and Ethan Cooper of Pikeville, N.C.

Other survivors include stepbrothers, Sherwood and W.H. Williford; "sisters," Delores Stoll and Nell Harrell; and several nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Beverly; father, Wilbert Reaves; mother, Daisy Reaves; brothers, Kenneth and David Reaves; stepmother, Clara Mathel Reaves; and nephew, John Reaves.

Special thanks for the care and compassion to all the Wayne Memorial Hospital staff of the emergency room, 4th and 6th floors, as well as the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
