BESSIE CULBRETH PHILEMON

Bessie Culbreth Philemon, 84, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington.

She was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Goldsboro, N.C., to the late Walter Earl and Violet Sholar Culbreth.

Bessie graduated from Goldsboro High School, then attended Greenville Cosmetology School.

She married Mike Philemon in 1955, and made Wilmington her home. They moved to Lake Upchurch just outside of Hope Mills in 1976, then back to Wilmington in 1991.

Bessie made crafts, enjoyed being in craft shows, and had a love for hummingbirds.

She loved her family dearly, and the family will never forget her chicken salad and pickles.

She was so happy that she could donate things to St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Good Shepherd.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Louise Cobb and Earline Van Rockel; grandson, Michael W. Philemon Jr.; and a special niece, Brook Culbreth.

Survivors include her sons, Daniel M. Philemon Jr. and wife, Natasha, and Wade Philemon and wife, Betsy; grandchildren, Matt, Anna, Taylor and Ellie Philemon; great-grandchild, Addy F. Philemon; and a brother, Walter E. Culbreth and wife, Peggy.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at Andrews Market Street chapel.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2015, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
