JACK GARRIS

William Joseph "Jack" Garris, 91, Goldsboro, passed away Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

A service to remember Jack will be held Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at 7 p.m. at New Hope Friends Meeting, with Bill Garner officiating. Interment will be Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, at 11 a.m. in New Hope Friends Church Cemetery.

Jack was born in Wayne County Nov. 4, 1922, to the late John and Josie Melvin Garris.

He was married for 65 years to Kathleen Thigpen Garris, who preceded him in death Dec. 6, 2009.

Jack was an active member of New Hope Friends Meeting.

Jack was in the automobile sales business in Wayne County for many years.

He was passionate about golf, racing, bowling and the New York Yankees. On a pretty day, he would be found on the golf course with family and friends.

Always willing to lend a helping hand, his legacy is love, laughter and "to know HIM and make HIM known."

Jack is survived by his daughters, Karon G. Anderson of Emerald Isle and Elaine G. Edwards and husband, Virgil, of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Chris Boyette, Angie Boyette, Burney Shirley and wife, Maile, Benji Shirley, Dr. Justin Edwards and Dr. Shelley Edwards; his great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Boyette, Al Joyner, Kaden Shirley and Addie Shirley; his special friend, Gene Boyette; his precious nieces; and his beloved nephews, whom he fondly referred to as "the boys."

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty Jo Hare, and his brothers, Paul Garris, J.B. Garris, Don Garris and Jarvis Garris.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to New Hope Friends Meeting Music Fund, 4451 E. U.S. 70, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church and other times at his home.
