LARRY J. PHIPPS

Larry James Phipps, 69, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at Vidant Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Larry was born in Lenoir County Oct. 1, 1944, to the late James Edward Phipps and Elizabeth Killette Phipps.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Thedie Gardner and Tom Harrison.

Larry will forever be remembered for his love of family and friends.

He graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1962 and Pembroke University in 1966.

Larry was a rehabilitation counselor with Vocational Rehabilitation in Goldsboro, and retired after 32 years as unit manager.

He was also a DJ in his earlier years, and his love for music never subsided.

He was an avid golfer, and had a special talent when it came to creating and building additions and structures to his home.

He was a member of Sudan Shriners and Mount Olive Masonic Lodge No. 208.

A service to celebrate Larry's life will be held Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steven Wicks officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in Calypso Cemetery.

Family members will greet friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Janet Hollowell Phipps; his son, Jay Phipps and wife, Dianne; his daughters, Melissa and Melody Phipps; his stepson, Thomas Hooks; two grandchildren, Maura Jo and James Phipps; two sisters, Anna Gardner and Diane Harrison; and a brother, Wiley Phipps and wife, Mary.

In addition to flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Shriners Crippled Children Hospitals, c/o Sudan Temple, 403 E. Front St., New Bern, N.C., 28560.
