HILBERT 'JOE' SWINSON

CALYPSO -- Hilbert Aldine "Joe" Swinson Sr., 77, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 11, 2013, at his home in Calypso with his family gathered 'round.

He was a native of the Beautancus community, was the son of the late Macon and Ruby Hargrove Swinson and grew up on the family farm, one of their six children.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, and had been a school teacher and coach, and later became assistant principal.

Later in life, he was owner/operator of Swinson Trucking.

He had held a membership in Bear Marsh Baptist Church at Beautancus since his childhood, transferring to Calvary Way Baptist Church at Pembroke, his wife's native area, where he relocated in his retirement, only to return to Calypso to live out the remainder of his years.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive, officiated by the Rev. Charles Locklear, and with visitation afterward. Interment will be Thursday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. at Calypso Cemetery, Calypso, N.C.

Family and friends are also being received at the residence, 109 E. Church St. in Calypso.

Mr. Swinson is survived by his wife, Jean Deese Swinson; four children, Gwendolyn Swinson King and husband, Ray, of Calypso, Hilbert Swinson Jr. of Salisbury, Gina Swinson Logue and husband, Mike, of Wilmington and Angie Swinson Blizzard and husband, Richard, of Mount Olive; four grandchildren, Tiffany Jane Swinson, Joseph Tyler Swinson and wife, Amy, A. Adam Locklear and Benjamin Sawyer Locklear; two great-grandchildren, Logan Swinson and Caden Smith; two brothers, Forest Swinson of Tampa, Fla., and Norman C. "Minky" Swinson of Mount Olive; three sisters, Janet Swinson Byrd of Cary and Eleanor "Sally" Swinson Lee and Gail Swinson Brinson both of Kinston; and several nieces and nephews.

A daughter-in-law, Pam Hines Swinson, preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hilbert "Joe" Swinson Endowed Scholarship, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, P.O. Box 1510, Pembroke, N.C., 28372.
