JOHN EARL DOCKERY

The Rev. John Earl Dockery was born Oct. 9, 1933, in Lumberton, N.C., to the late James "Jay" and Mary Frances Dockery. He transitioned from labor to reward Friday, March 22, 2013.

He received his education in religious studies through Shaw University School of Divinity.

The Rev. Dockery retired in 1996 from the state of North Carolina, Department of Transportation, after 28 years of service.

He retired from AME Church in May 2009.

After his retirement, he joined New St. John AME Church in Goldsboro, N.C. Because of his faithfulness, he continued his service as associate pastor until his health declined.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Annie McCormick Dockery; three children, Joseph Dockery, Annette Dockery and Vincent Dockery; seven grandchildren, David Dockery, Joseph Gordon, Christopher Simms, Joanna Dockery, Alexandria Gordon, John Earl Dockery and Jabien V. Dockery; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, his identical twin, James Edward (Dorothy) Dockery and Franklin Eugene (Gwendolyn) Dockery.

A visitation will be held tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at New St. John AME Church, 1307 S. Slocumb St., Goldsboro, N.C. An inspirational wake will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Friday at noon at McCormicks Chapel AME Church, 215 S. Main St., Lumberton, N.C. Interment will be held at Elizabeth Heights Cemetery following the services.
