Died Jan. 24, 2013

Robert A. Rand, 70, of Goldsboro and Roaring Gap, passed away after a brief illness.

Born in Mendon, Ill., to Arlo and Geraldine Rand, Robert joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB as well as the American Embassy in New Delhi, India. After military service, Robert completed his undergraduate education at East Carolina University and began a successful career in business, holding positions in banking, accounting and real estate.

Robert had a profound love of the outdoors and always considered the Blue Ridge mountains to be his second home. Robert was an avid golfer and recorded two holes-in-one at the Olde Beau Golf Club where he was a member. Robert had a passion for flying and was a licensed pilot and member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of America.

Robert is survived by his wife, Betty Best Rand, of Goldsboro, their son, Warren Patrick Rand, and his wife, Shannon McCann Rand, and their children, Sawyer and Avery Rand, all of New York City. He is also survived by a brother, Richard Rand of Quincy, Ill. and his family; and a sister, Shirley Lucas of Davenport, Iowa and her family. Additional survivors are his brother-in-law C. Graham Best, his wife, Billye, of Goldsboro, and their children.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations or contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Goldsboro, where Robert served as a deacon.
