Marshall Edwin Cox Jr. was born Dec. 28, 1952, in Goldsboro. He died Jan. 23, 2013.
Marshall was the son of Marshall Edwin Cox Sr. and Marguerite Hinnant Cox.
His maternal grandparents were T. Glenn and Sallie Mae Daniels Hinnant, and his paternal grandparents were Robert Edwin and Sarah Eliza Herring Cox.
Marshall married Rita McGarrity. They made their home in Nashville, Tenn.
Marshall's brother is Michael Glenn Cox of Chapel Hill. He and his wife, Kathy Williams Cox, are parents of Marshall's nephews, Adam Michael Cox and Jason Marshall Cox.
Edna Lummis is Marshall's mother-in-law and the mother of Sherrie Saller, Marshall's sister-in-law. Both live in Nashville. Sherrie is the mother of Marshall's nephews, Adam and Carson Saller, and his niece, Audrey Saller.
Marshall was educated in Wayne County Schools, and was graduated from Charles B. Aycock High School in 1971.
He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a degree in business administration in 1975.
He lived in Charlotte for a period of time, where he worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation as a relocation agent.
Marshall transferred to the North Carolina Department of the Treasury in Raleigh, where he managed the fixed income portfolio for the State Employees Retirement Fund.
He accepted a similar position with the state of Tennessee and moved to Nashville in 1988. Later, he accepted a job managing private funds with J.C. Bradford and Co. in Nashville. Marshall specialized in bond trading and became recognized as one of the top traders in the United States, with consistent performance in the top 5 percent.
Marshall became director of fixed income management at TransFinancial Bank, and later moved to Weaver Barksdale and Associates, where he worked for the last 14 years managing taxable bond portfolios and municipal securities.
Marshall was an avid sportsman. He loved to play basketball, and was an excellent snow and water skier.
The baying of the beagles Marshall heard on rabbit hunts as a young boy on the family farm, "Cassedale," ignited within him a lifelong passion for hunting. He loved to rise early on crisp Carolina mornings to go afield with family and friends to hunt deer, ducks, geese and quail.
Later in life, he enjoyed mid-West pheasant hunts with his wife, Rita, and their business associates. Marshall was known as a deadeye shot by everyone with whom he hunted.
He was a scuba diver and avid boater.
Marshall and Rita enjoyed the last years of their lives at their beautiful lake home on Kentucky Lake.
Marshall was preceded in death by his father, Marshall E. Cox Sr.; his wife, Rita McGarrity Cox; his grandparents; his father-in-law, Zane Lummis; and his cousins, Sheldon Griffin and Lane Yelverton, and their mothers, his beloved aunts, Sarah Cox and Eliza Reeves, respectively.
Visitation will be at Seymour Funeral Home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church, where Marshall was a lifetime member, with graveside services to follow at Cox-Thompson Cemetery on Cassedale Drive (New Hope Road, one-half mile west of Wayne Memorial Drive.)
