MOUNT OLIVE -- Boyd Barfield, 80, known to all as "Bunny," Summerlin's Crossroads community, passed away Tuesday evening, Jan. 8, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Services to remember him and his life will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, and will be officiated by the Rev. Mickey Whitfield and the Rev. Bryce Rouse. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday, Jan. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the residence at other times.

Mr. Barfield, a native of the Faison area, was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

He was the longtime owner and operator of J.T. Summerlin Feed Mill, succeeding his late father-in-law. After the mill's closure, he was employed with Murphy Farms.

He was a past member of the North Carolina Pork Association, and was retired from Oak Wolfe Volunteer Fire Department of which he had served as assistant chief and of which he was a charter member.

He was a longtime member of Rooty Branch Original Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as Sunday school superintendent and was a part of its men's fellowship.

He had been a member of the American Legion Post in Calypso, and had served as commander.

Too, in years past, he had coached baseball with the Dixie Youth program.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Summerlin Barfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Karen Barfield and Ken and Edie Barfield all of Mount Olive; grandchildren, Garrett Barfield and fianceé, Allie Armellino, Zachary Barfield, Claire Barfield, Wade Sasser and Hunter Sasser; a sister and brother-in-law, Ada and Guy Roberts of Goldsboro; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Barfield of Calypso and Gaynell Barfield of Mount Olive; a special cousin, Brunetta Bradshaw of Faison; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, McInnis and Iretta Bradshaw Barfield; three brothers and a sister-in-law, John Robert Barfield, Norwood Glenn Barfield and Frank Daniel and Marie B. Barfield; and his parents-in-law, J. T. and Ruby Summerlin.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to Rooty Branch Church, c/o Lettie Barwick, 205 Beautancus Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365, or Oak Wolfe Fire Dept., c/o Jack Alphin, 519 Bethel Church Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.
