CARY -- Hazel Smith Broom, 94, Cary, formerly of Goldsboro, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2012.

Mrs. Broom was born June 3, 1917, in Lenoir County to the late Quincy Adams Smith and Mamie Croom Smith. She was wife of the late Willie Madison Broom.

Mrs. Broom was a longtime member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Goldsboro, and presently attended First United Methodist Church in Cary.

She enjoyed trips to the coast and fishing, and was an avid Duke University fan.

She relished her role as the family matriarch, and cherished time spent with her family.

A graveside service of remembrance will be held Thursday, March 1, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. at Westview Cemetery.

Mrs. Broom is survived by two children, Willie Madison "Billy" Broom, Jr. and wife, Becky, of Cary and Hazel Broom Russell and husband, James, of Rogers, Ark.; four grandchildren, Brian C. Broom and wife, Kristen, Elizabeth Broom Cromer and husband, Zach, James J. Russell III and wife, Emily, and Katherine Elizabeth Russell; five great-grandchildren, Michael Broom, Katie Broom, Ava Cromer, Caleb Cromer and Lilly Russell; two brothers, Charles and Fate Smith both of Kinston; along with many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Rouse Funeral Home.
