AVON "HOOVER" LUCAS
Aug. 17, 1932-Sept. 19, 2011
Avon "Hoover" Lucas, son of the Late Lee Hassell and Fannie Bell Perry Lucas, was born Aug. 17, 1932, in Nash County. He departed this life Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at his home in Goldsboro.
Avon was the second oldest child of 12 children. As a baby, Avon's parents knew he would need special education as a deaf/mute. He was enrolled at North Carolina School for the Deaf in Raleigh.
He met a very special young lady in school, Mae Sauls.
After the death of his father, Avon had to drop out of school after completing the 11th grade, and also left that special young lady, Mae. He had to come home and work on the farm. His mother needed help with the care of his younger brothers and sisters.
As an older teen and young adult, his occupation was farming on Willie Bottom's and Ed Bissette's farms.
Avon and that special young lady, Mae, met again, and he found employment in Goldsboro, so he moved and married his love, Mae Sauls, July 3, 1973.
Avon said "no more tobacco farms, corn fields, soybeans, wheat fields and the hot sun." The occupation he had in Goldsboro were Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and Casey Lumber Yard, and he retired from Coble Dairy Co.
Avon loved being around his family and friends. He enjoyed the family dinners and special events and just getting together with friends.
Avon was a very loving husband, father and grandfather.
He became a very faithful member at Fellowship Baptist Church, and he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior.
Avon was preceded in death by five brothers, Vance, Lee, Theodore "Peter", Earlie and Earcell "Jabo," and a sister, Brenda Faye Lucas.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife, Mae Gloria Sauls Lucas; three children, Kenneth (Alice) Sauls of Goldsboro, Levozan Speight and Derrick Lamar (Antoinette) Smith of Raleigh; a mother-in-law, Lola B. Sauls; a close friend of the family, pastor Linda Faye Sauls; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, James Earl "Dick" Lucas and Wallace Ray (Dawn) Lucas of Rocky Mount, Carl "Huck" (Dixie) Lucas of Spring Hope and Ray Batts of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Lula B. Jones of Washington, D.C., and Thelma Joyce (Carlton) Richardson of Bailey; a sister-in-law, Katie Ruth Lucas; a special aunt Vashti Perry; and a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.
A service of remembrance will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, 332 Arrington Bridge Road, Goldsboro.
Following the services in the sanctuary, Mr. Lucas' delicate temple, along with his adored family, will be escorted to Elmwood Cemetery in Goldsboro for interment rites.
Mr. Lucas' earthen vessel is peacefully resting at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home, where the Lucas and connected families are receiving prestigious service.
