ALBERTA POPE WHITE

Alberta Pope White, fondly known as Bert, was born May 17, 1918, and departed this life Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011.
She was the seventh child of the late Eddie Pope and Anna Edmundson of Wayne County, N.C.
She is survived by her sister, Anna Marie Summerville, and brothers, Roy and Edgar Pope.
Oct. 12, 1935, she was joined in holy matrimony to the love of her life, Johnie Leroy White, who preceded her in death.
From that union, nine children were born, Johnie Leroy White Jr. of Junction City Kan., Cathleen Anderson of Jamaica, N.Y., Muriel Alberta Herring (George) of Hempstead, N.Y., Linda Faye Sorel (Reggie) of Fort Washington, Md., Jonah Ray White (Vivian) of Atlanta Ga., William Otis White (Tulcha) of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jo Ann White Thompson of the home.
Two children preceded her in death, Anna Maria and Saretha White.
Mother White is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Between odd jobs and working at J.P. Taylor Tobacco factory, Alberta put all of her energies into rearing her children. A champion for education, she spent many hours teaching and coaching them so that they would excel in academics.
As a God fearing woman, she kept them involved in the church so that they would become well rounded-people.
She was also involved in civic organizations, did volunteer work, was an active member of the NAACP and a Home Demonstration Club member.
Formerly she was a member of Greenleaf Christian Church, where she served faithfully in many areas.
In 1967, she became a member of New Greenleaf Church of Christ in Goldsboro, N.C. At New Greenleaf, she served on the Mother Board, sang in the senior choir, was chairperson of the floral club and was active in most aspects of the church until her health failed.
For many years Mother White was well known and loved for her famous apple turnovers, which she used for project fundraising.
Mother White, as she was fondly called, loved the Lord, loved and cared for people in and outside of the community, and she would read the Word into the wee hours of the morning -- with her, age was just a number. To us she was the epitome of love.
The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Home, and other times at the home, 2100 N. Church St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
The celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at noon at Goldsboro Raleigh District Assembly, 211 W. Hooks River Road, Goldsboro, N.C. Pastor Dorothy H. Heath will officiate, and interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
