Dorothy Howard Grady, 90, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at Duke Raleigh Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Dorothy was born in Lenoir County Oct. 22, 1920, to the late Adolph Howard and Mildred Smith Howard.

She was the epitome of a true Southern lady, whose innocent love of God and family and art of cooking "sweet tea and fried chicken" made her the heart of the Grady clan.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 6, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Garris Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Grady Family Cemetery in Albertson.

Dorothy is survived by her son, John D. Grady III and wife, DeAnna White, and their children, and John D. Grady IV and wife, Babbs Posey, and their son, her great-grandson, John D. Grady V., her great-granddaughter, Lila Frances Grady, Adam Howard Grady and Danielle Rupert, Ginger B. Edwards and husband, Michael, and their two daughters, Amber and Jordan, Kimberly B. Whaley and husband, Ronald J., and their children, Brad, Miranda and Quinton; daughter, Sherry Grady McDonnell and children, Peter Daniel McDonnell Jr. and Catherine Kannady, Grady Howard McDonnell and Ciara Macanas, Melissa McDonnell Hoffman and husband, Tim, and their two daughters, Katie and Hunter, and family friend, Oliver Wendell Smith Jr., her daughter, Dixie Grady Jernigan and husband, Dr. Edward Williams Jernigan, and their children, Edward Williams Jernigan III and Kelsey Umstead, John Carroll Jernigan, Sarah Miller and Jordan Vassar McRae Jernigan; her sister, Marguerite Howard Hales of LaGrange; and sisters-in-law, Mary Anna Grady of Albertson and Peggy Ellis and husband, J.B., of Tarboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Grady Jr. PE; her son, Carroll Howard Grady; her son-in-law, Peter D. McDonnell Sr. PE; her brother, Adolf Howard Jr.; and her sister-in-law, Amelia Grady Snelling.

The Grady family would like to express its deep appreciation to the many caregivers who showed so much love and care to their mother during her period of declining health.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 5, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
