SARA LOUISE "SALLY" ROGERS

Sally Rogers passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, in Goldsboro.

Born in Zanesville, Ohio, to Oldis Ivan "Tim" Harrington and Helen Whitchurch Harrington, Sally spent much of her childhood growing up in Wheeling, W.Va.

Sally graduated with honors in dietetics from West Virginia University in 1944. She was a member of Alpha XI Delta Sorority. It was in Morgantown, at WVU, during World War II, where she met her husband, George H. Rogers. They were married for 40 years until his death in 1985.

Sally believed in volunteering her time for the betterment of others through the Episcopal Church Community Soup Kitchen, volunteer for several years at Wayne Memorial Hospital, deliver Meals on Wheels, participate in Reading to Succeed, belonged to the Goldsboro Extension Club and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was honored with "Outstanding Volunteer of Wayne County" in 1995 and was also honored by the governor of North Carolina for her lifelong commitment to volunteerism.

She was instrumental in helping to start three Baptist churches, one here in Goldsboro -- Madison Avenue Baptist Church, where she served as a deacon.

Sally always found time to play the piano and also sing in church choirs. She was a member of the Third Century Singers and the Wayne County Oratorio Society. She also enjoyed traveling to see family and friends.

Sally is survived by her brother, Rodney Harrington, of Arlington, Va.; two daughters, Nancy Rogers Warton of Golden, Colo., and Helen Rogers of Rifle, Colo.; one son, George H. Rogers Jr. of Newark, Del.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sally's name to the Mission Fund at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, 300 S. Madison Ave., Goldsboro, NC 27530.

Visitation with the family will be from 5 until 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at Seymour Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at 1 p.m., at Madison Avenue Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
