ELIZABETH PRINCE DIXON

Elizabeth Prince Nufer Dixon, 86, passed away peacefully Sept. 30, 2010, while surrounded by her family.
The family will receive friends and family on Monday Oct. 4, from 5 until 8 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday Oct. 5, at the church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
The daughter of William Frederick and Mary Goode Stevens Nufer, she was born on May 8, 1924, in Goldsboro. Prince graduated from Goldsboro High School and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She was a life-long member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Raleigh.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Wright Tracy Dixon Jr.; their children, Wright Tracy Dixon III, William Nufer Dixon and wife, Elizabeth Patteson, Prince Dixon Witt and husband, Roy Michael; her sister, Mary Goode Braley and husband, Chuck; eight grandchildren, Wright Tracy Dixon IV, James Stevens Dixon, William Nufer Dixon Jr., Richard Patteson Dixon, James Wright Dixon, Margaret Edmundson Dixon of Raleigh and Roy Michael Witt Jr. and Wright Dixon Witt of Charlotte.
As a young girl, Prince started swimming in the community pool in Goldsboro. She quickly progressed to competing in North Carolina and all along the eastern seaboard. During this period she set several AAU national records in backstroke, freestyle and individual medley. Her career culminated with a world record set in the backstroke in the Bowman Gray Pool in Chapel Hill. She was inducted into the Goldsboro High School Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. She was recognized by Sports Illustrated twice as "Best Woman Athlete by Birth State" and one of "The 50 Greatest North Carolina Sports Figures."
Prince was an active member of her community. She served on the Rex Hospital Guild and was a member of the Junior League of Raleigh, The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America and the Wake County Bar Auxiliary, among others. In honor of her community involvement, she was chosen as the Honorary Chairman of the North Carolina Debutante Ball. Prince had a life-long love of gardening and all sports. She taught numerous children across the state to swim. She enjoyed playing tennis and golf. As a fan she was often known to pull for the underdog.
The family wishes to thank her dedicated caregivers for all the love and devotion given to Prince: Jackie Satterwhite, Regina Williams, Pearl Abraham, Tina Peele, Joy Goodson, Betty Barnes, Wendy Lyons, Melanie Hamilton, Annie Houpe, Donna Turner and Vicki Jenkins. Also we would like to thank all of the devoted team members of Mayview and Hospice of Wake County especially Anna Wolverton and Melissa Brandt.
