EDDIE ARTIS

Deacon Eddie Artis, son of the late John Eddie and Maggie A. Artis, was born Dec. 20, 1921. He departed this life Friday, June 18, 2010, at 5:45 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
He served in the United States Army.
He worked at Carolina Clinic in Wilson, N.C., where he retired.
He decided to work as a foster parent for Edgewood Elementary School in Goldsboro, N.C.
He also occupied his time by doing yard maintenance in his spare time.
He joined St. James Holiness Church in Statonsburg, N.C., at an early age, where he served as a deacon. He also sang in the senior choir.
Eddie married Roberta Taylor Artis and to this union eight children were born. Two of them preceded him in death, Johnnie Melvin and Alvin Ray Artis.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Roberta T. Artis; four sons, Darris Lee Artis (Beatrice) of Wilson, N.C., and James Eddie Artis, Joycoylon "Jock" Artis and Timothy Artis all of Fremont; two daughters, Angela Artis of Kinston, N.C., and Alice Lorraine Artis of Goldsboro, N.C., whom he lived with; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Larry Artis (Lillie) of Goldsboro, N.C.; five sisters, Mary McCoy, minister Mamie Artis, Carrie Newsome, Maggie Diamond and Avis White all of Wilson, N.C.; and a special friend, Lillie M. Taylor of Fremont, N.C.
A visitation for Deacon Artis will be held Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home and Cremations Inc. Celebration of life services will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. James Holiness Church in Stantonsburg, N.C.
Following the services in the sanctuary, Mr. Artis and his adored family will be escorted to Fremont Cemetery for interment and military rites.
For it is now that Deacon Artis has crossed that eternal river and entered those pearly gates. All that knew him can have comfort in knowing that he is now singing in the heavenly choir, leading his favorite song, "Lord I Can't Even Walk, Without You Holding My Hand."
The Artis family is receiving services of compassion and class from E.M. Matthews Funeral Home and Cremations Inc.
