WALTON K. HERRING

Oct. 25, 1929-June 20, 2009

PRINCETON -- Walton Kenneth Herring, 79, 2592 Old Smithfield Road, died Saturday evening.

The funeral will be held tonight at 7 at Casey Funeral Home in Princeton, with the Rev. Ralph Parker officiating. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Princeton Cemetery.

Mr. Herring, known by his friends as "Shad" and "Pa" or "Papa Shad" by his grandchildren, was born Oct. 25, 1929, to the late Herbert Gordon and Ethel Ferrell Herring.

He served his country in the Marine Corps. While in Korea, he was in a fox hole fighting for our country's freedom for more than 40 days without a bath and had only k-rations to eat. He said "you never took your boots off."

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He worked for Southern Bell for 32 years.

He was a devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather to all who would allow and accept him as that. He loved his God, the Marine Corps and family.

He loved fishing and working in his garden as long as he had his health. He also loved to travel. Shad was fascinated with steam trains and steam boats (anything with a whistle). Shad was always there to help you and never asked for anything in return. He was always laughing, smiling and cutting up. Shad was the joker in a deck of cards.

He is survived by wife, Christine Martin Herring; son, Walton Kenneth Herring Jr. of Fayetteville; daughters, Charisse Martin of Georgia and Beth Chadwick of Wilmington; stepson, Lavan Sullivan of Bunn; stepdaughters, Lenora Morton of Princeton and Tammie Fail of Princeton; brother, Billy Gordon Herring of Selma; and 14 grandchildren

He was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Herring, and a sister, Phoebe Murphy.

The family will receive friends beginning at 6 p.m. and immediately following the service.
