Mary Cleaves Daniels Johnstone, 88, passed away Friday at WakeMed Raleigh.

Mrs. Johnstone was born in Goldsboro on April 2, 1921, to the late Frank Borden Daniels and Rosa Powell Daniels.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew "Andy" John Johnstone, and her son, Andrew John Johnstone lll.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Don Ellington lll of Raleigh.

Mrs. Johnstone was a 50-year member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and two-time regent of the David Williams Chapter in Goldsboro.

She was also a member of the North Carolina Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Colonial Dames. Mrs. Johnstone was a long-time board member at Historic Stagville in Durham.

She and her husband were instrumental in the organization of the Wayne County Museum and in 1982, she was the co-coordinator for the book "Heritage of Wayne County." She always supported the efforts of North Carolina Preservation, especially in its recent project supporting the redevelopment of downtown Goldsboro.

St. Paul Methodist was her church home and she spent many hours in the history room there.

A graveside celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Willowdale Cemetery in Goldsboro.

The family will receive visitors at her home today, from 6 until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wayne County Museum, P.O. Box 655, Goldsboro, N.C. 27530.
