MOUNT OLIVE -- Master John Patrick Best, 8-year-old son of John Michael and Tara Mozingo Best, of 159 Kenneth Best Road, died Thursday evening in a motor vehicle accident.
Though his life was but for a short season, it was full of action and adventure. A service to celebrate that life will be held on Easter Sunday at 4 p.m. at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Mount Olive. Pastors Doug Bartlett, Billy Rose and Jimmy Whitfield will officiate. Interment will be in the Kenneth Best Family Cemetery located near the residence.
Patrick, a third-grade student at North Duplin Elementary School, was a very active child with many interests and abilities. He enjoyed beach music, snow skiing, four-wheeling, playing the guitar, and video games. Fishing at the Outer Banks was a favorite outing, and he loved playing with his matchbox cars. He loved playing sports, especially football and baseball, and was in his second season playing centerfield for the Yankees in the Dixie Youth Baseball League, and was called "Cheeseball" by his teammates. He was a fan of the N.C. State Wolfpack and the Carolina Panthers, and he was eager to help with any chores, with the exception of cleaning his room! He possessed a loving nature, was tender-hearted, and was known for giving hugs for no reason. He had a passion for "worrying" his brother and sister, and was a proud Boy Scout.
In addition to his parents, Patrick is survived by his 11-year-old "big" sister, Chesney Lynn Best and his 7-year-old "little" brother, Michael Tyler Best, both of the home; his maternal grandparents, Larry and Patsy F. Mozingo of Goldsboro; his paternal grandparents, John and Pam K. Best of Mount Olive; paternal great-grandparents, Bobby Ray and Annie Frances S. Kornegay of Mount Olive, and Tempie B. Best of Mount Olive; paternal great-great-grandmother, Hazel Odom Brown of Mount Olive; an aunt, uncle, and cousin, Graham, Crystel, and Brianna Mozingo of Goldsboro; an aunt, Kelly Best, her fiance, Brian Minnick, and cousin, Sean Sasser, all of Mount Olive; his god-parents, Wade and Leigh Best of Mount Olive; and a large extended family of kin, friends, teammates and classmates.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents, W.P. "Pat" and Bessie Mozingo, and Graham and Charlotte Faircloth, who were all from the Goldsboro area; and his paternal great-grandfather, Kenneth Best, who was from Mount Olive.
