The annual Cures for the Colors will be held Saturday at Wayne Community College.

The event is a fundraiser for Southeastern Cancer Care, a nonprofit organization founded in 2011 to assist cancer patients during their time of need.

"We issue grants to the patients for basic living essentials, which includes gas, food, utilities and oncology prescriptions," said Lee Parrish, Southeastern Cancer Care coordinator at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center. The organization helps cancer patients who live in the eastern part of the state.

Cures for the Colors starts Saturday morning with a walk/run. There will be an individual 5K timed event that starts at 8 a.m. There is a fee of $30 to participate. The 100-mile team event will start at 9 a.m. The fee is $30 per participant. The one-mile walk/run starts at 10 a.m. The fee is $15 per participant.

Parrish said some teams really get into the walk/run part and they wear their own shirts or other items and may be running for Mom or maybe for their grandmother who has passed away. And people do it in honor and memory of loved ones.

After the walk/run, there will be various activities for children, like face painting, balloons and more. Princesses and superheroes will also be on hand to visit and have photos taken with the children.

There will also be live entertainment by Carolina Treat Band and the Blake Kearny Band.

Throughout the day, various groups and churches will be selling all kinds of food, with the money going to Cures for the Colors. Anyone wanting to sign up to sell food should contact Parrish.

There will also be various Southeastern Cancer Care merchandise for sale.

The day will culminate in a children's balloon and lantern release at dusk. Lanterns are for sale at SMOC and the day of the event for $10 each. They can also be purchased on the website at www.southeasterncancercare.org.

"The lantern release is going to light up the sky," Parrish said.

To sign up to participate in the walk/run, go to the website or stop by SMOC to register.

"Even if you're not able to do the walk/run portion, we encourage you to still bring your family and friends and come," Parrish said.
