Norwayne Middle School TSA student Courtney Williams receives her first place awards for junior solar sprint and chapter team during the career and technical education showcase Wednesday.

Students in Career and Technical Education, or CTE, programs in Wayne County Public Schools were recognized Wednesday for being top finishers in state and national competitions during the school year.

This is the first year for the CTE Showcase format, said Beverly Boltinhouse, director of the CTE program. She said the individual and small group presentations have historically been made during a school board meeting.

The hour-long reception featured a steady stream of students receiving certificates for their efforts in the CTE areas that range from agriculture and marketing to technology and health sciences.

The bulk of their efforts, Mrs. Boltinhouse pointed out, are not in the schools' regular curriculum.

"It's extra time the teachers are spending and the students are investing the extra time," she said.

In at least one case, the recognition wasn't limited to students, she said, as Faye Davis, a registered nurse working at Charles B. Aycock in the HOSA -- or Health Occupations Students of America -- was presented the OSHA Healthcare certification.

"Teachers sometimes go through and get the certification that they're teaching their students," Mrs. Boltinhouse told the audience.

Faculty awards also went to Teachers of the Year in the CTE program.

Isaac Davenport, Spring Creek Middle School agriculture teacher, was named the CTE Middle School Teacher of the Year. Caitlin Foss, a business teacher at Southern Wayne High School, is the CTE High School Teacher of the Year.

Even the refreshments for the reception were provided through the CTE program, with Family and Consumer Science students demonstrating their skills. Cupcakes and cookies were made by CBA students, while the fruit and vegetable tray was created by students at Eastern Wayne High and the dip and cheese ball were the work of Southern Wayne students, she said.

Students receiving the ServSafe Certification in proper food handling included Skyler Davis, Payton Herring, Stormi Bass, Ariel Anderson, Tamarice Elam, Dominique Rouse and Austin Hawkins, all from CBA.

Two students had displays at the event -- Abby Sauls from CBA, a 3-D home model, and Brian Lopez from Spring Creek, independent study for Apparel Creations, a dress he created.
