WILSON -- Wayne Country Day polished off its Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A girls' soccer championship with a 3-0 conquest of long-time nemesis Greenfield at Ben Forbes Field.
The Chargers logged a perfect 6-0 worksheet against CPIC opposition this season.
"The girls thoroughly deserved the win tonight," said WCDS head coach Steve Ellis, whose team extended its win streak to six games and has outscored its opponents 21-0 during that stretch.
"We dominated play in the first (half) and the first goal took the wind out of Greenfield a bit ... eased a bit of pressure and pushed us on to get another (goal). Margaret (Tanner) and Langley (Barnes) have a good understanding, and Ally Willman works tirelessly in the midfield.
"It was a great way to finish the regular season."
Barnes opened the scoring with a shot to the roof of the net on an assist from Tanner. The roles soon reversed when Tanner connected on pass from Barnes.
The duo hooked up for the final goal -- a strike by Barnes toward the top corner off of Tanner's assist.
Wayne Country Day (9-5-0) awaits an at-large bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A state playoffs. The 12-team field will be revealed Wednesday, and play begins either May 8 or 9.
The Chargers have appeared in every NCISAA tournament since 2001. They have won seven consecutive opening-round games and advanced to the final four in 2011.
