PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock wanted to sustain its momentum.

New Bern wanted to survive an Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference road game. Each team got its wish during a 1-1 overtime draw at Hardy Talton Stadium on Wednesday evening.

"Obviously winning the game is always goal number one," C.B. Aycock assistant coach Byron Adkins said. "But I felt like we played well and I am proud of our guys for getting this result. A tie against a very good 4-A opponent is great."

The Golden Falcons got on the board in the 12th minute when a throw-in by Bobby Hampton sailed inside the 18-yard box. Tim Naughton leapt between two defenders and deflected the ball into the net.

New Bern (8-3-3 overall, 5-0-2 ECC) answered in the 33rd minute when Tyler Oakley converted a free kick from 20 yards out. The free kick was the result of an ill-timed hand ball by the Golden Falcons.

The teams struggled to score from that point. The second half was played primarily in the midfield as the Golden Falcons (5-6-1, 2-4-1) and Bears seemed to lose their legs late.

C.B. Aycock got the best scoring chance of the overtime when Collin Zacharzuk ran onto a long ball and fired a shot across the goal mouth that rolled just wide of the right post.

"We had our chances and so did they," Adkins said. "Defensively I thought both teams played well, and I thought our midfield really stepped up and had a good game."

The teams each finished with seven shots on goal. The Golden Falcons were awarded seven corner kicks and the Bears were awarded six.

C.B. Aycock entertains South Central on Tuesday.
