Sanders would like to see seniors accomplish goals

When Hobbton takes the field on Friday night it will be 364 days since it last won a football game.

Spring Creek can certainly sympathize. The Gators have had three double-digit losing streaks over the past six seasons. They have not won more than one game in any season since 2006.

Despite all of that, Spring Creek is in position to wipe the slate clean with a win. If the bookmakers in Las Vegas were setting odds, the Gators might even be a favorite on the road.

Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. in Newton Grove.

"I think that no matter what either team's record is the team that executes better offensively will be the one leaving with a win on Friday night," Spring Creek head coach Aaron Sanders said. "We have to limit big plays defensively and we can not turn the ball over on offense. It's that simple."

Spring Creek (1-5 overall) and Hobbton (0-5 overall) have played one common opponent this season. The Gators defeated Wake Christian 24-20 and the Wildcats lost to the Bulldogs 42-26 one week later. Each team is 0-1 in Carolina 1-A Conference.

Two wins, including a conference victory, could potentially get a team into the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A (small-school) state playoffs. So there is plenty to play for on both sidelines.

"More than anything I want to see our seniors accomplish their goal," Sanders said. "The guys that have been out here three or four years want to win so badly. They don't want to go win one game, they want to win multiple game for the first time in their careers."

Hobbton leads the all-time series 8-2.

The Wildcats average 11.8 points a game on offense and allow 39.7 points a game on defense. The Gators score 13.9 points an outing and give up 34.1 points defensively.

"We have had a good Monday practice and a good Tuesday practice," Sanders said. "Hopefully we can keep that going the next two days and really go out their fired up and ready to play."
