DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne, for three innings, played like a team ready to pull off an upset.

The bid fell apart in the fourth, and Southern Nash rolled to a 10-3, non-conference softball victory on the diamond at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Errors cost the Saints once again.

"It's a familiar song, because we have been singing it all season," Southern Wayne head coach Michael Wiggs said. "We will put together a few good innings and then one thing won't go our way, and we let that turn into a big inning for the other team."

Southern Wayne jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Cierra Moody was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI double by Madison Davis. Missy Morris tagged an RBI single two batters later to put the Saints ahead.

The Ladybirds answered in the top of the fourth.

A walk, two Saint errors and an RBI single by Lauren Shores pushed the visitors out in front 5-2. Takia Thompson capped the outburst with a tape-measure home run to left field that made the score 7-2 and essentially put the game away.

"We made five errors tonight and each one of them cost us," Wiggs said. "In nine games we have made 45 errors. That is way too many if you expect to go out and have a chance to win the game."

Southern Wayne added a run in the sixth inning when Keaton Bradley reached on an error and Moody followed with an RBI base hit. But it was not enough to start a rally.

Davis struck out 11 Ladybirds and took the loss in the pitcher's circle.

Southern Wayne (1-8 overall) travels to North Lenoir tonight for an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference showdown.
