MOUNT OLIVE -- Joseph Westbrook hammered a three-run, fourth-inning home run, and No. 1-ranked Mount Olive College routed N.C. Wesleyan, 17-4, at Scarborough Field on Wednesday evening.
The Trojans (24-3 overall) claimed their ninth straight win.
Westbrook concluded the day 2-for-4 with four RBI. Jacob Rogers batted 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Dan Hayduk contributed three hits and two RBI. Daniel Coffey drove in two runs and Ryan Faison batted 2-for-3.
MOC scored 13 unearned runs off four NCWC errors.
The Trojans led 3-1 through 31/2 innings when Rogers ignited a two-out, six-run outburst. Tied for sixth in the nation in triples, Rogers connected on a two-RBI triple and trotted home on Hayduk's single. It was Hayduk's third hit of the game.
Coffey drew a walk and Westbrook blasted a pitch high over the left-field fence for a 9-1 advantage. It was Westbrook's second homer of the season.
MOC hurler Greg McDaniel finished with nine strikeouts in 42/3 innings. Kris Barone (1-0) halted a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth and limited the Battling Bishops to one hit in 21/3 scoreless innings for the win. Barone struck out five and walked one.
Keith Spinner retired the side in order in the eighth for Mount Olive. Chris Hinton pitched the ninth.
The Trojans return to action this weekend at Conference Carolinas archrival Barton. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at Nixon Field, and a single game on Sunday.
