LITTLEFIELD -- The wait is over.

Goldsboro ended its winless skid with a 48-24 victory over short-handed Manteo in the Carolina/4 Rivers 1-A Conference dual-team tournament Saturday at Ayden-Grifton High School.

The Cougars (1-14 overall) avenged an earlier loss to the Redskins in the D.H. Conley Duals before Christmas break.

"I am very proud of the efforts of this first-year team," said Goldsboro head coach Jim Phillips. "The excitement of winning is a plus for the team. They have been working hard and are competing against teams with a great deal of experience."

Goldsboro fell to Ayden-Grifton, which secured one of the league's two dual-team playoff berths; Princeton and reigning regular-season champion Rosewood. Phillips' team finished the day 1-3.

"Seniors Augustus Altman, Devin Crim and Maurice Yelverton have stepped up their game and are leading the way," said Phillips. "I am especially grateful for the work that assistant coaches Chris Thigpen and Jonathan Rudolph have done to help prepare the team.

"Winning is a step toward reaching our goals. We have come a long way, but (we) have a long way to go."

The Cougars entertain first-year program Corinth-Holders on Friday. The match begins at 5 p.m. at Wayne Academy.
